The Importance Of Being Selfish

The Importance Of Being Selfish by Piya Khanna

(FOR HEALTHY EATING TIPS, JUST CLICK ON THE PREVIOUS POSTS)

Trying to please all of the people all of the time? Not possible! Piya Khanna explains why you need to be selfish when considering the key question of what you want to do with your life.

(Imagine waking up every morning and not being able to do what you love. Imagine not living your dreams because you're scared. You know what happens when we don't do what we wish we could do? We start resenting ourselves, and in result we then start radiating that negative energy onto others. So guess what? I'm okay being selfish with accomplishing healthy goals on my own, that way I can radiate that happiness onto others. Funny how that works, huh? ~Rocio Ponce)
Not bad being selfish in order to reach dreams, right? I'm okay with it! This type of selfishness never hurts anyone.
Here I am in Cirque Du Soleil as The Nanny (in fat suit). This was an adventure, hard work, but a great experience. Did it, then I had to move on to other things:

Selfish is a bad word in most people's books. As a society, we applaud selflessness, honour, sacrifice and service and frown upon anyone we think of as selfish.

A little selfishness can be a good thing

But consider the opposite view for a little while. You can, of course, revert to your original point of view at anytime after reading this article. Just suspend your disbelief and indignation for a few minutes to explore this thought. I work hard, or at least I try, to make sure that I practice what I preach. I wasn't teaching for a while because of grad school, but the money started running out, so I had to come back to what usually do & that's train others to stay healthy. So I need to be first in line to be healthy in order for me to help lead others on a wellness path! It's critical to be selfish and self-centered, in my view, especially when considering the key question of who you want to be in your life. Notice that I said your life and not your mother's or father's or partner's or best mate's life. Since it is your life, who else could possibly have a better idea than you about who you want to be and what you want to do? A lot of people think they have a better idea, but will they live with the consequences of their suggested choices and decisions? No, you will, and if you are reading this piece, you probably already are and are experiencing a certain level of dissatisfaction. Here's the thing: if you were meant to live your life the way someone else wants you to, you would be that someone else. Since you are you, maybe there's a clue in that. Whatever/whoever created this magnificent Universe with all its beauty, wonder, splendour and mystery, created you. Is it possible a system so elegant and precise that every snowflake that ever fell from the sky is unique, messed up when it came to you? I don't think so. Out of all the classes I've taught: Dance, Movement/Voice For Actors, Fitness or MindBody, this particular Movement/Voice For Actors I taught at TVI Actor's Studio was my favorite, because these students allowed me to be a comfortable clown. Now, if that's selfish, then I love being selfish ;-). I don't have footage of the adult's Voice & Movement For Actors class because I just didn't film it, but I have footage of the Voice & Movement For Youth Actors:
If you don't follow your heart's desire, you'll eventually end up being miserable and resenting the people and reasons that you allowed to talk you out of doing what you want. It's a strange aspect of being human and we are brought up to please others and not hurt their feelings, so often we don't say no and then hurt ourselves in the process. The question I invite you to consider is,
is it worth it?

You're responsible for your own happiness

What would you tell your child or best friend if they asked you whom they should please themselves or another? Would you say, "Go ahead and be miserable, just make the other person happy? Of course you wouldn't! So what stops you being your own best friend? Many of us don't want to hurt the people we love and rightly so. Loving someone means you want them to be happy. The fact that they love you means they definitely want you to be happy too. Will seeing you unhappy make them happy? The key question is - do you love you enough to want to see yourself happy? After I worked my arse off in Jerez De La Frontera, Cadiz studying as well as performing Flamenco Dance, I came back to L.A. & was invited to teach a Bata De Cola workshop. How selfish is that? Actually, I was sharing what I learned. I guess it's okay to be selfish to work hard for myself to be better than I was yesterday, then pass it on to others. Selfish is cool ;-)
When we love what we do, we make sacrifices in our lives. We do them alone to not drag anyone into the hard work that goes into this journey. Others see it, they enjoy it, but have no idea the hard work it takes to get to that certain level of caliber; and yet, as artists, we know we can always do better while those seeing us say, "oh my god! that was amazing." I wonder why that is?
We often say "yes" to others when we want to say "no". We do things for others when we know we don't want to. Sometimes, we even become someone for others because it's expected of us and we don't want to disappoint them and then we resent them for it! Resentment is not a loving emotion and it'll damage a relationship. Perhaps the quote that best describes this point is Resentment is the poison we drink thinking it will kill someone else. I also believe that we disempower others by taking ownership of making them happy. How so? Well if we take on the responsibility for another's happiness, the message they get is that they need us to make them happy and cannot be happy on their own. So, what happens if you have a bad day?

Bottom line is that we are each responsible for our happiness and it's their job to make themselves happy, not yours. It is however your responsibility to make yourself happy. Take ownership of your happiness.

Out of the years of doing theatre, I gotta say, working with these girls was fun (fun drama, worked with Omayra Amaya, & had the pleasure of working with a special cast member that past away). It was for Carmen the musical at the La Jolla Playhouse. What a selfish, but great life adventure ;-)
Here's this reel that took a lot of selfish, but healthy, time to put together from different projects i've been in. I love my life and I wouldn't trade it for anything ;-)
If making others happy makes you happy, the most compelling reason to follow your heart is that, when you're empty, you have nothing to give anyone. Think about it. If you've had a hard day at the office and come home exhausted and frazzled, how available are you as a loving parent or partner? How much of a friend can you be to another when you're tired and unhappy? We are at our most loving and generous when we are well and happy. That's when we can be caring and have fulfilling relationships with our loved ones and that's when we are most enjoyable to be with. The people we care about delight in our happiness! So you owe it to the people you love to be happy and well - mentally, emotionally and physically, because that's when you are at your best and have the most to offer them. Include yourself among those you love and you're more likely to make a sound decision when choosing what you want to do with your life.
This is one of the yoga classes I teach. I'm about to work on my second yoga teacher certification course starting in January 2014. Why? Because I want to deliver stronger & evolved poses to my students. But firstly, I am doing it for myself. How selfish is that? ;-)

The reason I am certified in different forms of Fitness & MindBody is because I am passionate about the way the body moves, heals, and how the body can be changed, and the positive benefits and effects it brings to the body mentally, physically, and emotionally. There's nothing more than eating healthy and exercising:

How to start being more selfish

You need to build your selfishness muscle in small steps, just like any other!
  1. Before making any commitments or saying yes to requests, ask - “Do I really want to do this?"
  2. Be clear on the consequences of saying yes (or no) to a request and ask if you are prepared to live with them. If you are, go ahead. If not, reconsider and come up with an alternative.
  3. Learn how to say "no" and mean it. Practice saying a congruent and convincing "no" in the mirror (or get a friend to help you). Stand tall, chin up, chest facing forwards, feet hip-wide and firmly placed on the ground. Imagine someone asking you to do something you don't want to is standing in front of you. Pause, take a deep breath and say "no" firmly. Do this several times and practice every day if you are not used to saying no to people.
  4. Include yourself in your list of important people in your life and make space in your life for you. Start with the small stuff, for example, take an evening off every fortnight or month to do your own thing, whether that's going to the pub with your mates, getting a massage or going to the opera or a movie with the girls. (Remember to give your partner and loved ones the space to do the same).
  5. What fills you up? Do something that fills you up and gives you pleasure every month. Dance the Tango, read a great book, watch stand-up comedy, go to a music concert - whatever floats your boat! Schedule it in your diary like a date or business meeting and stick to it.
  6. Applaud yourself and your success on being selfish. Even if it's a very small thing like saying "no" to a telesales agent - celebrate!!!
  7. Be your own best friend. When you have a decision to ponder, ask, "What would my best friend advise me to do?"
Is it selfish to say that I love singing? Why? Because it's a great workout, the way I perform on stage, plus I get to meet other talented musicians in which helps me grow. How selfish is that? ;-)
I am passionate about wellness, nutrition, dance, theatre, and music. This is my band. I am so lucky:
Go out there and be selfish because, when you are all of you, those around you can be all of who they are.

I teach/train others in fitness (I am a certified personal trainer) as well as in Pilates one on one and Pilates classes (I am a certified Pilates Instructor). I also have a B.A. in Dance from CSULB, am a professional Flamenco Dancer. Why? Because it has helped me physically, mentally and emotionally and I enjoy helping others reach their goals. If that's selfish, then selfish I am ;-)

I work with all ages. This here is one of my students (clients) whom has improved her posture, strength, and flexibility. Very proud of her. She's a trooper:

Come to my class and come sweat a little. I teach fusion mat pilates class guaranteed to make you sweat, strengthen and lengthen, as well as bring you in focus.

My Before & During pic here to inspire self .
LADIES, IF YOU'D LIKE FOR ME TO DESIGN A MEAL PLAN ALONG WITH A WORKOUT
REGIMEN CUSTOMIZABLE TO YOUR NEEDS, I'M UP FOR THE CHALLENGE (No one
human being functions the same. We all need different types of meals
that our bodies will respond to, we all need certain types of workouts
that our bodies will respond to, we are all different).
Created my own meal plan & workout regimen customizable to my needs ('cause it was time to say good bye to the business of grad school & distraction from wellness: My workouts (same thing I do for other 1on1 students - aka clients [can't stand the word client. It sounds so impersonal] anyhow, same thing I do for my students whether it's customizing a program to fit their needs through PT, Pilates or Flamenco (yes, I have a private student who's taking Flamenco privates under my direction as a workout regimen - she says that apparently this way helps her learn the art form at a faster pace. So I just grill her because she requests it, - I have been doing for myself on & off for some years now (this time, i gotta stick to it because my health & well-being depends on it).

In what ways or areas do you find it difficult to be 'selfish'? What small steps can you take to start saying 'no' and creating boundaries for yourself? Leave a comment below.

#34 A Healthy Lifestyle Is A Goal In Itself

Welcome to the Cleanse & Fitness home remedy detox program #34 :-)

You can also join me on Instagram. I'm under flamencex.

Always drink plenty of water (if you can't drink a gallon a day, then stay hydrated to avoid being thirsty)

Please let your friends know about this blog :-)

My day begins:
1) my liver detox (ph balancer) on an empty stomach first thing when i wake up: in a cup, put 1 tsp of baking soda, 1 tsp of organic molasses, one lemon, 4 sprinkle dashes of powdered cayenne pepper, a few sprinkles of ginger powder, 1 cup of filtered water (or alkaline water). Can't say the taste was the best, but please google the benefits of all the ingredients i'm mixing together, ok?
2) on an empty stomach also, i took a low impact fast walking for 45 minutes. Since i haven't eaten breakfast, my walk is low impact (but fast walk) because i haven't consumed the nutrious breakfast i usually do.
When you do high impact workouts, you always have to eat something as fuel at least 30 min to an hour before your intense workout, so as to use as an energy source only, so that when your body gets to that anearobic state, it starts feeding off the energy source fuel you consumed earlier as a way to give you the power to either withstand any fatigue stage or so that you're not running on low energy.
It takes the body 20 minutes, after an intense workout to start looking for energy fuel. If you don't eat the fuel before your intense workout, your body will start looking for that fuel within your muscles eating up the valuable amino acids you need to keep within your muscles so that you can keep going non-stop while at your intense workout level.
Now, since my 45 minute fast walk, on an empty stomach is at a low intensity, after 20 minutes of fast walking at a low intensity, my body starts to need fuel to keep walking. So 20 minutes after walking, the body starts to burn fat, so it starts feeding off your fat as fuel to keep going. Go away fat, go away.
But since i'm just walking, & it's not intense, my body won't start munching on my muscles for fuel, it'll start munching on the fat (yes, i have fat :-).
I'm not contracting my muscles so intense that my body is screaming for aggressive energy.
I'm simply taking a brief 45 minute fast walk, early in the morning as i wake up, on an empty stomach, very low impact, so that my body uses the fat i want to get rid of as fuel :-). It works everytime. Don't forget to have your liver detoxifying drink, as shown above, to start boosting up your metabolism.
Then i'll have me huge breakfast :-). Stay tune for that picture......... Come back to see what i ate.....

I'm back:
Here is part of it. A cup of organic gluten-free oatmeal with prepared protein milk (organic coconut milk with a scoop of vanilla protein powder a mixed in there).
I will pour the protein milk into the cup of oatmeal, then cut pieces of this organic green apple into the oatmeal.
Yes, i like my oatmeal like cold cereal. It's yummy that way.
I actually first got to the pilates studios where i train clients earlier to take my walk before i train my first client (IN & UP PILATES YOGA & PILATES STUDIO), i took my walk, then in my car i had part of my breakfast in my car waiting. Which is this picture.
I also had made sum scrambled egg whites (3 eggs) with tomato, cilantro, & onions which i ate before my oatmeal here with green apple.
Breakfast should be your number one important meal to concretely have so that you don't feel tired through out the day. Remember, you are what you ate the day before, the week before, six months before, and a year before.
Also, know that you've been sleeping all night on an empty stomach, so your body needs that breakfast to make up for the energy you lost during your sleep. Yes, you burn energy when you sleep, so you need to replenish what you lost during your sleep.
Treat your body right :-)
Aside from the oatmeal, part of my breakfast was 3 egg whites mixed with tomato, cilantro & onion. Then on top, i added some of yesterday's pico de gallo with pieces of avocado (pico de gallo: cut up tomato pieces, minced garlic & green onion, cilantro, 1/4th minced chile serrano, cured in lemon & sea salt).
These eggs were so yummy.
Now, i'm gonna go to the other studio, workout a little, then this time instead of teaching a one-on-one session, i will teach a mindbody Pilates class at HEARTBEAT HOUSE FITNESS & DANCE STUDIO, where I teach mat pilates & which I also use as one of my workouts (that's why i dont mind teaching fitness & mindbody group classes, because then i get to workout :-)

3) my workout for the day was i did a little bit of resistance & length on the apparatus before my client got there which was after i took my 45 mintute walk & ate my breakfast at In&UpPilates which is one of the studios i train clients at (Silverlake/Echo-Park area).
Then i taught an intense power mat pilates group class in which i got to take advantage of utilizing also as my own workout at Heartbeat House Studio (Atwater Area)
Join my mindbody group classes at Heartbeat House Fitness & Dance Studio, as well as you can try my one-on-one private pilates sessions at In&UpPilates in the Silverlake/Echo-Park area; i am offering an intro package of 8 private one-on-one sessions for only $445.00 (you save $235 bucks off the regular rate). You can go to http://RocioPonce.com/ to check that out or email me, rocioponcefitness@gmail.com, for any questions you have regarding one-on-one/semi-private Pilates & Personal training sessions.

4) Gotta have my green drink (a snack may i say). Using the nutri-bullet, this green drink contains all organic:
Green apple
Kale
Swiss chard
Celery
Carrots
Strawberries
Chia seeds
Grounded Flax seeds
Freeze dried wheat grass powder
Spirulina powder
Walnuts
One scoop of vanilla protein powder
Filtered water
Almond milk
(I actually had two of these. The second one without the protein powder)

5) Lunch:
Homemade black bean burritos with rice tortillas (rice tortillas from Sprouts health food store).
Plus, I made my favorite tomato sauce which i also use on my rice pasta spaghetti as spaghetti sauce.
Click here to find out why black beans are good for you:
This is how i made the sauce:
In the nutri-bullet using the two blades, i put all organic fresh: one roma tomato, green onions, 3 garlic cloves, tbsp of xtra virg olive oil, sea-salt & yum yum.
When you make your whole black bean burrito/s, you can add this sauce over the beans, wrap it up then eat eat eat. So good.
I like that spicy garlic pinch, but if you don't then just add one garlic clove.

6) Dinner: i will have a huge salad. I won't put a picture because i know you can get creative. But if you can't seem to get creative, then just refer to my previous blogg posts which have recipes :-)

#18 A Healthy Lifestyle Is A Goal In Itself

Welcome to the Cleanse and Fitness home remedy detox program #17

Always drink plenty of water (if you can't drink a gallon a day, then stay hydrated to avoid being thirsty)

1) my liver detox on empty stomach first thing when i wake up (the glass to the left): mix drinking water, lemon, 1/2 tsp baking soda, 1/2 tsp cayenne pepper & drink up.
2) Breakfast: a green drink (recipe located on previous post), blue berries, strawberries, and a small spoonful of almond butter (sorry, i don't like peanut butter).
2) my workout today:
Today I rest this body. Yesterday I simultaneously taught & worked out pilates, weights, flamenco rehearsal, then taught another power pilates class (which i took advantage of also using it on my body as an extra workout). So now today, i continue improvising on healthy meals, yet i will rest the body of any workout.
So come back to see more healthy meals that i've prepared throughout the day. Or check out my previous posts on different clean detox meals & workouts.

3) snack time: avocado on a brown rice tortilla. Niam niAm
4) ooops.. Forgot that i have to teach dance (flamenco the hip hop). So i guess it's not a resting the body day. Not bad. I'll just have fun with it, like always.
Also, wanted to mention the importance of tea. I've been a big tea drinker for 30 years, since i was a kid, & had to share this cool picture on teas. I actually drink all of these teas i drink. I like how it was nicely put together
5) i drink two of these a day, full of water, 2 liters/2qt/64oz:
6) my lunch: all organic raw red leaf lettuce, spinach, kale, brocolli, avocado, tomato, green olives, garlic, yellow bell peppers, flax seeds, 1-1/2 tbs of xtra virg olive oil, squeezed lemon & niam niam :-)
7) my green drink for a snack :-> (recipe located on the previous post)
8) nap time :-)
9) another snack, then it's din din time  (recipe located on the previous post):
10) Din din ladies & freaks. So delish: mixed greens, garbanzos, hearts of palm,  roma tomatoes, with pits kalamata olives, pine nuts, and ice green matcha almond milk lattĂ© (i had to treat myself because i've been so good. My cheat meal of the week. What do you think? :-)

#14 A Healthy Lifestyle Is A Goal In Itself

Welcome to the Cleanse & Fitness home remedy detox program #14 :-)

Always drink plenty of water (if you can't drink a gallon a day, then stay hydrated to avoid being thirsty)

1) drink liver, detox cleanser (recipe on post #13).
2) my breakfast is a mixed bowl of: gluten-free oatmeal, grounded flax seeds, organic plums, red quinoa, super green drink powder berry flavor, gluten-free vanilla protein powder, almond milk.
In this picture, this is before i add the almond milk & mix it all together, just for presentation:
3) My workout: (haven't thought of one yet. I'll get back to you to see what I did).

Workout: flamenco drills with plyometrics, cardio dance (getting routines ready to teach, so I used it also as my workout).
Did triceps, biceps, shoulders, core, legs (lateral),  tomorrow i will do back & legs (frontal).
I definitely didn't get bored with my workout :-)

4) lunch & snack: green drinks were my lunch which consisted of brocolli, spinach, kale, parsley, almond milk, blueberries, gluten-free vanilla protein powder, bee pollen, goji berries, apple, water. Yummy :-).
My snack was lightly broiled crunchy brocolli with onions & garlic, lightly salted with pink himalayan salt
5) dinner will be a huge salad: baby greens, sweet small yellow tomatoes, raw beets, black whole beans, parsley, cooked quinoa, thin sliced red onions & lots of garlic.
Dressing: apple cider vinegar with olive oil

6) these are the supplements i take. From tyrosine, to Vit B-complex, to an a seaweed called bladderwrack, & the rest are herbs, minerals, & other homeopathic goodies :-).
I highly recommend you take extra supplements because even though we are eating raw organic veggies & fruits, as well as drinking a gallon of water, sometimes our raws are somewhat depleted from the actual nutritions we need because they have been outside of their planted earth's soiled home for a while now. So take some supplements :-)

Lucky me, where I live I have a cool view of L.A. :-)

#3 A Healthy Lifestyle Is A Goal In Itself

Welcome to the Cleanse & Fitness home remedy detox program #3 :-)

Today was my resting day. But I juiced, snacked on raw veggies, fruits & nuts. Water water water. My green juices today only consisted of spinach, kale, parsley, apple, almond milk, water, gluten free vanilla protein powder, freeze dried wheat grass, just half teaspoon of baking soda all mixed in the nutri-bullet. And drank sum yummy tummy tea (fresh mint tea). See you tomorrow :-)

#13 A Healthy Lifestyle Is A Goal In Itself

Welcome to the Cleanse & Fitness home remedy detox program #13 :-)

Always drink plenty of water (if you can't drink a gallon a day, then stay hydrated to avoid being thirsty)

1) woke up, on an EMPTY STOMACH took my liver cleanser as you can see: squeeze one lemon, 4 sprinkle dashes of cayenne pepper, 1/2 tsp of pure baking soda all mixed in drinking water. Mix all together & drink up.
So you know,

Bicarbonate is good for/as:
Ulcer Pain:
It kills cancer because it raises the PH in the body because cancer can't thrive in high or alkaline PH:
Slows down the decline of kidney function:
Antacid:
Acidosis:
Splinter removal:
Sunburn remedy:
Deodorant:
Enhanced sports performance (to be taken with caution if baking soda should be used for this reason:
Insect bites:
Teeth whitener:
Foot soak:
Detox bath:

Lemon is good for/as:

*antibacterial, antiviral, immune-boosting powers, as a weight loss aid, a digestive aid and liver cleanser. Lemons contains notably citric acid, calcium, magnesium, vitamin C, bioflavonoids, pectin, and limonene--which promotes immunity and fight infection.

Cayenne pepper is good for/as: lowers blood pressure, fights prostate cancer growth; eases upset stomach, ulcers, sore throats, spasmodic and irritating coughs, diarrhea. It's anti-flu/viral agent, an anti-inflammatory agent and helps relieve allergens, stimulates the digestive tract which increases the flow of enzyme production and gastric juices. This it aids the body’s ability to metabolize food (and toxins). It also good in relieving intestinal gas :-) &  stimulates the intestinal peristaltic motion, aiding in both assimilation and elimination (getting all the bad stuff out :-). It is good for relieving arthritis, diabetes, psoriasis and herpes-related nerve damage. Cayenne also stimulates the production of saliva, an important key to excellent digestion and maintaining optimal oral health. It helps reduce atherosclerosis, encourages fibrinolytic activity and prevents factors that lead to the formation of blood clots, all of which can help reduce the chances of a heart attack or stroke.  It's great for blood circulation, detoxifies the body, and a joint pain reliever.

Sometimes i'll take cayenned pepper in hot water and drink it fast. Oh boy! Hot hot, but so so healthy for you :-)

2) My workout: On the pilates reformer, kind of treated it like a proformer, & did something different with this body because it's hungry for variations, more muscle pnf workout stregth length, & needed to bring this heart rate up up up. Mission accomplished. That way I don't get bored.
So change it up, then gradually go all hard on your routines :-) as you get stronger & leaner. REMEMBER, THE END RESULTS DEPEND ON YOUR JOURNEY. DON'T EXPECT INSTANT CHANGE OVER NIGHT. IT TAKES WORK, IT TAKES TIME. WHY? BECAUSE THIS WAY YOU SAFELY & GRADUALLY TRAIN THE BODY ADJUST INTO A DIFFERENT (HEALTHIER) BODY EACH DAY. SO BE PATIENT, BUT DON'T STOP WORKING HARD!

 3) Kale salad:
Mixed olive oil, with apple cider vinegar, real fine grounded garlic in the nutri-bullet, himalayan pink salt, lemon.
Pured the dressing over the organic kale, mixed it all together, & yummy. Delish!
I got created with my mexicanism here. I grounded some organic pineapple with water, then added the ginger to get grounded also, then added mint to continue grounding, then served it with ice. My lunch was a happy healthy one.
Might get on the treadmill later on for 35 minutes just for shites & giggles :-)
Drink plenty of water, please and take your supplements :-)

4) For din din, definitely another kale salad with my yummy dressing as seen on picture above, & a green drink (for the recipe which includes some gluten-free vanilla protein powder, look for my recipes at the previous blogs i've been posting).

#11 A Healthy Lifestyle Is A Goal In Itself

Welcome to the Cleanse & Fitness home remedy detox program #11 :-)

Always drink plenty of water (if you can't drink a gallon a day, then stay hydrated to avoid being thirsty)

Ok, I'm gonna take pictures & document my day so that you can see how I do it to eat clean & get my exercise in. I'm gonna come back to this post ,number 11, each  time, to record what I am eating & what type of exercise I am doing today. As you have noticed, I keep changing my workout routines & my raw foods (except for my green drinks) because I get bored if I don't. So here we go:
1) liver cleanser: glass of drinking water, 1/2 teaspoon of pure baking soda, 4 dash sprinkles of cayenne pepper
